The centerpiece of this Austin, Texas, bedroom by Heidi Feliz-Grimm of Martha O’Hara Interiors is a California king canopy bed topped with crisp white bedding and plump pillows. Its matte black metal frame contrasts with the soft tones and texture of the rest of the furnishings and materials, including a beautiful chevron-pattern velvet upholstery on the end-of-bed bench.

This primary bedroom is in a Victorian home on the Massachusetts coast. Sarah Henley of Henley Design mixed items already owned by the clients — including the traditional iron bed, seascape artwork and antique crock lamps and nightstands — with new furnishings to create its fresh, little-bit-farmhouse, little-bit-coastal style. The vintage geometric Afghan rug, a woven leather basket and a Scandinavian-modern-style bench add worldly flair.

7. Awash in White
In the primary bedroom of this newly built coastal farmhouse-style Connecticut home by GLDesign, rustic white oak beams create architectural interest, warm up the pale white-and-light-blue palette and accentuate the high ceiling. Meanwhile, woven elements, including the bench, oversize chandelier, headboard and sconces, lend lots of natural texture and beachy vibes. Sparingly used black metal accents contribute just the right amount of edge to the soft space.

6. On the Grid
A handmade wool carpet, upholstered sleigh bed and layers of neutral bedding bring tranquil and comfortable style to this primary bedroom in Minnesota. Designer Stacia Winkler of Vintage Elements says the grid focal wall painted in dark gray-blue serves to both ground and “transition the asymmetry” of the space. The dark color also adds some drama, especially paired with the tiered chandelier hanging from the vaulted ceiling.

5. Light Beams
This Monterey Park, California, bedroom by Realm Design also benefits from an eye-catching chandelier that draws the eye up to a beamed, vaulted ceiling. While such heights can create a cavernous feel, here a tall upholstered headboard and reading sconces mounted high on the wall fill the vertical space and help the large, neutral-toned room look inviting and intimate.

4. Seaside Slumber
Interior designer Virginia DesRoches of Ironwood Studio nodded to this Massachusetts guest bedroom’s coastal locale with a palette of light woods, watery blues and white. More overt references are the two framed coral prints and a vintage Brazilian shipping crate at the end of the bed.

Another dark-painted and dimensional feature wall — this one in an Austin, Texas, primary bedroom by interior designer Sarah Rice — creates a dramatic backdrop for white bedside lamps and bedding and a white shaggy rug. The dark flooring and charcoal gray tufted bench add to the room’s moody, sophisticated look.

2. Tudor Touches
The tray ceiling in this Salt Lake City bedroom by Remedy Design Firm is a striking focal point thanks to its unique herringbone treatment. Other notable elements include the iron chandelier and tall four-poster bed, which befit the home’s English Tudor style. But the room looks thoroughly modern with its warm gray, cream and tan palette, the combination of prints and textures and the contemporary landscape photo above the headboard.
